How To Apply Make Up - Part 3 - Lipstick and Lip Gloss

After applying your foundation and eye make up, lipstick can add the final touch to your look. You can also use lip liner to define the shape of your lips, and lip gloss to give you a shiny finish. This step by step guide will help you perfect the art.

There are basically six items that you will need — lipstick, lip balm, lip brushes, lip liner, facial tissues and a mirror.

To start with, chose the right lipstick colour for the correct occasion. Go for colours that complement the natural shade of your lips, using darker tones that complement your overall colouring. Matte lipsticks give a muted finish suitable for daytime use, satin & gloss finishes offer more of an evening look. Cosmetic counters and high street chemists have a large range of colours available.

Make sure you have applied all other make up before putting on lipstick and lip liner. Dab a small amount of lip balm or petroleum jelly to make your lips moist. Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips with a lip liner whose colour is one shade darker than the lipstick. Start in the middle of your upper lip and work outwards. Stay on the outer edges to open up thin lips and line well within the edges to understate very full lips.

Apply lipstick from the tube, or you can use a firm small lipstick brush. Coat the lips evenly, and make sure you stay within the edge of the lips.

When you have finished, blot your lipsto remove Any excess colour and to even out the texture.

Finally, five useful tips for applying lip stick:

Remember to touch up the lips after a meal, as lipstick can transfer to coffee cups.
For a longer lasting colour, shade both lips with lip liner after defining them. As your lipstick fades throughout the day, the liner offers a hint of colour.
Balance heavy eye makeup with a soft lip colour.
To give the illusion of a thicker top lip, line its outermost edges. Forgo the liner on the bottom lip.
Chill your lip liner so that it sharpens more easily.
